UTMAN Posted March 14, 2017 Posted March 14, 2017 By the way can you give us more information? Define "people". Is it your friends, parents, siblings, grandma, neighbour, mailman, FBI or who do you want to prove it's not a virus? And tell us the situation. Maybe then we can help you more. 1
Wuis Posted March 14, 2017 Posted March 14, 2017 (edited) The amount of people using it, show YouTube videos who use it, the rate at which new downloads are available and the detailed messages that come with these new downloads. If OpenRCT2 was a virus, it would be the most expensive virus ever based on cost/result. And as I doubt they're trying to get in the Guinness world record book, there wouldn't be a reason to. HookerHeels Posted March 14, 2017 Posted March 14, 2017 Forget what everyone else is saying. Since I'm assuming its your parents, just grab their cheeks, look deeply into their eyes, and say "ITS A GAME YOU GOD DAMN IDIOTS." :) 1
YoloSweggLord Posted March 15, 2017 Posted March 15, 2017 First of all, it's an open source project. If anyone tried to sneak a virus into the game, it would definitely be noticed by the other devs. Second of all, the sheer number of people who use OpenRCT2 should be enough to convince people that it's not a virus. OpenRCT2 wouldn't be the popular game that it is if it were putting viruses on people's computers. 1
jensj12 Posted March 16, 2017 Posted March 16, 2017 If you have any doubt, download the source code, check it and build the game yourself. 1

X7123M3-256 Posted March 18, 2017 Posted March 18, 2017 (edited) Ultimately it's virtually impossible to conclusively prove a program isn't malicious - you will have to trust someone, at some level. The source code is open for examination, which is good. But did you actually read all of it? (I certainly haven't) And if you did, are you sure you'd spot any malicious code? (it can be quite subtle). Do you know that the binaries available for download were actually built from that source code? And if you built from source, do you trust your compiler to produce a correct implementation? (you probably do). Edited March 18, 2017 by X7123M3-256 1
SpiffyJack Posted March 21, 2017 Posted March 21, 2017 (edited) Regarding the question of OpenRCT2 being a virus?...?...? It all gets down to this: 1. How many programs on your system do you think may have in bedded keylogs tracking your actions beyond your browser? 2. Is ORCT2 the only program on your system that you suspect has a virus? 3. Are you paranoid? There is no correct answer , only opinions and perceptions. Regardless of any and all reasons to support or deny the claim. This is my opinion/perception ... Maybe it is and maybe it isn't! That being said: Any and all programs thay you allow to make changes to your system prior to or during operation have the ability to be a virus and you gave authorization to do so. In regards to OpenRCT2's defence I personally believe they can be trusted. Period. If they want my porn collection, they can have it ! Lol... In addition, I've met many others in this forum who are very worthy of hacking just about anything... and they're not the only only ones.. But that's no different than any other sites you may visit or programs you may install... I'm just being honest. Edited March 21, 2017 by SpiffyJack 1
Broxzier Posted March 24, 2017 Posted March 24, 2017 Secretly we're all criminals that have set up an ongoing project to try to get people to download a modified version of a decade old game, and created all this fake evidence and a community around the project to get people to trust the builds, which are in fact viruses! Mhuahahah. On 21-3-2017 at 23:55, SpiffyJack said: There is no correct answer Yes, there is, just check the the definition: "A computer virus is a type of malicious software program ("malware") that, when executed, replicates by reproducing itself (copying its own source code) or infecting other computer programs by modifying them." OpenRCT2 is not a malicious software program It does not reproduce itself It does not modify other programs Technically OpenRCT2 does get close to the last one, because it first used a modified version of the RCT2 binary that would load the DLL on startup, but because it's not malicious software, it doesn't count as a virus. 1

True OpenRCT2 is not a malicious software program. But it does reproduce in the manner of objects and content being placed in the game from all over the place... I'm not saying you can't embed within an object or can you... I know I can in certain architectural and design programs.

Reproduction means it creates a functioning copy of it's own executable code. OpenRCT2 does not do that, or anything of the sort. 1
