Looking to Measure Selected Area

I've searched briefly, both here and in general, however I have been unable to locate this type of tool or feature. I'm looking for something that will simply allow me to select an area of land and tell me the dimensions (so that I may select an appropriately sized coaster to fit the space). This seems like such a simple thing I assumed it would have existed already. Perhaps it does, and I'm just not using the appropriate search terms?

Have you got grid lines showing ? If not, then turning that feature on will allow you to count them yourself.

I'm aware I can count myself, but squinting and counting out 60+ squares repeatedly is a bit much. I just figured with all the elaborate tweaks I'd been seeing, surely something simple like this would have been done at some point.

This seems like a feature that would be suited for a plugin. I'm not expert on plugins though, so I have no idea whether such a plugin already exists or that you'd have to write it yourself (and whether that's possible with the current plugin API, but this seems simple enough).
