Right now, the game is still dependent on the vanilla code, which means we can't change the data structures used to represent the map, and are therefore subject to all the existing limits they impose. We cannot remove the limit on loaded objects, placed map elements, total rides, train count, station count, sprites, and many other things. We also can't implement new ride types or track pieces, or anything else that cannot be saved in the existing format. Dependence on the original code also means that the game can only run properly on x86.

However, it's getting close to the point where the game will no longer include any vanilla code. At that point, it's a question of what we want to change, rather than what we can. Some things would require more work than others. The developers aim to remain compatible with save files from vanilla, which means that even if the save format changes there will be limits on how drastically it can differ - some hacks rely on the specific manner in which RCT2 handles map elements.

Changing and adding sprites is already possible - the fast forward button and junior coaster steep-to-flat piece are sprites that were not present in vanilla. At this point, any change to the game that doesn't touch the save format can probably already be implemented.

Incredible detail. Thanks a lot :)

Edit:  Where can I locate the plugins for ladders? (I'm using the stable build at this time.)

I assume you are using the scenario editor to build your landscape, entrance etc. I also assume you have chosen the rides and scenery that will be available both at the start and after doing research. You can't put rides in the park using the editor. What you need to do is:

    1. Give your park a name and save it. Also save the landscape in case you wish to make changes later. Keep in mind that ALL landscape and terrain changes made AFTER you get the park set will have to be made in sandbox mode.

    2. Open your scenario and put it in sandbox mode and place the rides you want to begin with. Use the console to add more money if needed. "set money XXXXXXXXX" Set the park to the closed mode unless you want peeps running around. I usually freeze the climate too.

    3. When everything is like you want it:

         a.  Take the park out of sandbox mode, unfreeze the climate and set the park to open.

         b.  Reset the date.

         c.  Set your initial cash back to its original amount using the console ("scenario_initial_cash XXXXXXXX")

         d. Save the park

    4. Open the toolbox and select "Convert saved game to scenario."

Thank you so much for this detailed response.

  3. I wonder if you guys can assist me with this one please.

So for the past few hours I've setup my own scenario. I've adjusted the terrain, setup a park entrance and planned out everything accordingly. BUT, I've just noticed that I can't place rides? I wanted the player to be able to start out with a premade roller coaster, purely for income.

Can this be done as I do not see the icon?

  4. Hello all, hope you're well and have had a pleasant week thus far.

Just thought I'd pop in and say hi. I've been a long time lurker and this is my second post! Just wanted to get involved with the community, I think you have something really special going on here :)

  5. Thank you for your kind words. I am going to make some alterations within the week, as I don't particularly like the colours I have used for the coasters. I'm not a great fan of the coaster design at the very top of the map either. With OpenRct2, do we have the ability to export and import my map to a plain, larger map? that way I can continue to build on this.

Please excuse this reply. I have found out how to increase the map size.
